As many of you know, the University of Hawai`i depends on the generosity of its alumni and other friends to keep its programs going. The Sociology Department is no exception, and many of the events and programs provided by the department are possible only through your kokua.

The Department of Sociology currently has a number of funds established at the University of Hawaii Foundation. These funds provide support for special events and lectures and enable us to enrich the educational experiences of students beyond what is possible with the regular university budget. We welcome contributions from all department members, alumni and friends so that we can attain the best quality possible in our educational and scholarly endeavors. The existing resources still fall short of enabling us to provide support and recognition for the quality work of all deserving students and faculty in our department.

The Na Ho'Aloha O Sociology Fund (Friends of Sociology Fund) provides general support for the programs and events of the Department of Sociology, including enabling us to offer honoraria to visiting speakers and to co-host special conferences and events. This fund also serves as the Aloha Fund of the department when it is appropriate to recognize visitors and or to celebrate special accomplishments of members of the department.

The University of Hawai`i Foundation has created a named link, http://www.uhf.hawaii.edu/SociologyDepartment, that you can refer to when you would like to donate to our general fund online.

The Joseph E. Seldin Endowment in Sociology was established by a generous donation from the estate of former Professor Seldin by his family. The fund serves to provide support for graduate student travel of professional meetings where students have had a paper accepted for presentation.

The Bernhard Hormann Prize Award Fund was established by the friends and family of former Professor Bernhard Hormann to award student papers which reflected the interests of Dr. Hormann in ethnic relations and social processes in Hawaii. The Department offers awards to the best undergraduate paper and the best graduate paper examining social and cultural phenomena in Hawaii.

The Gary Kazuo Sakihara Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in the memory of a former graduate student and long-time friend of the sociology department. The fund is used to honor a sociology graduate student through a award or travel stipend. Recent happenings relating to the Sakihara award can be found on our news and events page.

If you would like to contribute to one of these funds via mail, please send your donation to University of Hawai`i Foundation, P.O. Box 11270, Honolulu, HI 96828-0270. Make the check payable to University of Hawai`i Foundation. Please make sure the name of the designated fund is specified in the memo section of the check and in your cover letter.
