Hawaii sociological Association

The brief description of the nature of activities of our Domestic Nonprofit Corporation, as filed with the State of Hawaii, Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs says:

To stimulate, improve research, instruction and discussion; to encourage cooperative relations of persons in Hawaii engaged in scientific study of society.

Instrumental in the formation of the HSA were Harry Ball, Kiyoshi Ikeda, and Peter Nelligan, at the May 23-25, 1979, State Conference on the Teaching of Sociology.  The Association was formed in the Spring of 1980 and formally incorporated with the State of Hawaii as a non-profit organization on December 12, 1980.  Helen Choy was the first President and thereafter became the unofficial executive officer until her retirement in 1995.  Michael Weinstein has been the institutional memory for this reconstruction.
