Aloha, e komo mai (Hello and welcome) to the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, Department of Sociology website. Your visit will hopefully result in a better understanding of our history, what and who we are, what we might be able to offer you in terms of undergraduate and graduate degree programs, and the events and activities of our students and faculty.
This Department stands on the shoulders of some of the founders of American Sociology, who have graced our halls as faculty and visitors. Our current faculty represent several disciplinary backgrounds in the social sciences and are well experienced within their specific interest areas. They are active and productive scholars, addressing real life social issues using a sociological lens. Our focus is not so much on the behaviors of individuals but rather on the impact of social factors and contexts on the behaviors themselves.
Our view of the world is both local and global. Our mid-Pacific location offers not only the natural social laboratory of multi-ethnic Hawai‘i and the city of Honolulu, but also exceptional resources and opportunities for the study of Asia and the Pacific. Our student body is drawn from the local community, from all over Asia and the Pacific, as well as from the U.S. mainland, Europe, and other countries. The themes of ethnic and race relations and the study of Asian and Pacific societies appear in the work of nearly all of our faculty and graduate students. We provide students with a broad foundation in theory and methods of sociological research, and then we focus on the following four areas, in which we can offer exceptional expertise and opportunities for research and training:
Mahalo nui loa (thank you very much) for visiting our new website. Please send us a note about your experience or if you have any questions [email: firstname.lastname@example.org].
